The inevitable fallibility of policing

The title of this paper is taken from the final sentence book How People Judge Policing (Waddington et al. [2017]. Policing. Oxford: Oxford University Press.) which, though it had four authors, was really brainchild late Tank Waddington. picks up book’s observation and seeks to develop it, examining problematic core policing, using as a basis for thinking more generally about issues trust, legitimacy reform. There now exists an increasing body research which shows how delivery policing can influence perceived procedural justice, popular police, variety public behaviours such compliance with law co-operation police (Tyler, [2017] Procedural justice policing: A rush judgement? Annual Review Law Social Science, 13, 29–53.). Such work having increased impact on debates around conduct increasingly seen central reform efforts in Anglo-American some other jurisdictions. Though accepting broad thrust research, well its importance, suggests that there are dangers over-reading potential not least forgetting crucial lessons history research. argument here focuses inherent complexity inevitability error within it. simple but often overlooked lesson controversy dissent norm rather than exception much dispute disagreement reflecting failure approach or procedure, derive nature itself.
